AUSTIN, Texas, March 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cenpatico is taking Stamp Out Stigma to downtown Austin during SXSW Interactive. On Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17, Cenpatico will be at the Halcyon Coffee House patio at West 4th & Lavaca Streets, encouraging people to take the online pledge (www.cenpatico.com/in-the-community/stamp-stigma) to Stamp Out Stigma and tweet their support for reducing stigma related to mental illness and addictions.
An initiative spearheaded by the Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness (ABHW), the Stamp Out Stigma campaign challenges each of us to transform the dialogue on mental health and addiction from a whisper to a conversation.
- It is estimated that 1 in 2 adults will have a mental health issue during their lifetime.
- Nine in 10 people with mental health conditions say their problems are made worse due to stigma and discrimination.
- Less than one-third of adults with mental health issues will get help.
- Ninety percent of those who get help significantly reduce symptoms and improve their quality of life.
The Stamp Out Stigma campaign engages the public through social media, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest, to:
- Recognize the high prevalence of mental illness and substance use disorders;
- Reeducate ourselves, friends and family on the truths of mental illness and addiction; and
- Reduce the stigma of mental illness and addiction and transform lives.
Even if you are not living with a mental illness, you can make a lasting impact by speaking up for those who do. "Although mental illness and addiction are some of the most common health conditions, they are also some of the hardest to come to terms with or talk about. We want to change that," said Sam Donaldson, President and CEO of Cenpatico. "Our goal is to promote conversation, awareness and understanding of mental illness and addiction as a means of overcoming stigma and stereotyping. Cenpatico is proud to participate in the Stamp Out Stigma campaign."
