SAN ANTONIO and BOSTON, Dec. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cengage, an education and technology company, devoted part of its annual National Engagement Summit last week to a community service project for students in the KIPP San Antonio Public Schools. Hundreds of employees gathered to assemble solar car classroom kits and backpacks filled with school supplies for underserved students.
The 140 solar car kits will promote fun, hands-on learning activities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at the KIPP Poder Academy, which serves students in fifth and sixth grades. Additionally, 200 backpacks of supplies will benefit students throughout KIPP San Antonio Public Schools.
"At Cengage, our employees share a passion for education and helping all students succeed in the classroom," said Michael Hansen, CEO, Cengage. "With STEM skills in high demand, learning activities that connect to the real world can inspire interest and excitement around these subjects at a young age, engaging and instilling confidence in students."
"We are extremely appreciative of Cengage's generous and thoughtful donation," said Faith Castellano, 5th grade science teacher, KIPP Poder Academy. "At KIPP San Antonio, we believe all students should have the opportunity to reach their dreams which often requires a novel approach. This program enhances our STEM program while addressing critical classroom needs. The Cengage partnership serves as a great example of the type of innovation necessary to prove what is possible in public education."
KIPP San Antonio is part of the national KIPP Network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and life. Nationally, more than 93 percent of KIPP middle school students have graduated high school, and more than 82 percent of KIPP alumni have gone to college.
