Celebrate the Baltimore Monument Lighting at the Maryland Historical Society!

BALTIMORE, Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- on Thursday, December 6 at 5 p.m., the Maryland Historical Society (MdHS) is hosting a free Monument Lighting Open House. "It's become an annual tradition here at MdHS," says President Burt Kummerow. "Just as every year, Mount Vernon celebrates the holiday season by illuminating the Washington Monument in festive lights, we decorate our lobby with festive ornaments and feature hot chocolate, cookies and even a visit from a historical Santa Claus!"

The Baltimore Monument Lighting, sponsored by Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, will begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Washington Monument, with the Lighting Ceremony set to start at 7:00 p.m. A colorful burst of fireworks marks the finale.

The Open House at MdHS will run from 5 p.m.-8 p.m., making it the perfect time to stop in before or after the Monument Lighting. On hand will be carolers from the Institute of Notre Dame, homemade cookies, holiday crafts, and even Santa Claus – who will teach us about the origins of Christmas symbols.

Musician Jared Denhard will perform holiday songs on the harp, old-time Christmas songs on the harp, 19th century banjo, and border pipes.

December also marks the beginning of the Maryland Historical Society's annual fund drive.
