Through this initiative, CED will work to advocate for the successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in the states that have adopted them. CED will promote a better understanding of the value of high education standards, such as the Common Core, and their implications for the quality of our education system as a gateway for individual and economic prosperity.
"We look forward to helping mobilize more business champions across the country in an effort to increase the understanding and awareness of the voluntary, state-led Common Core State Standards and how it will help all students succeed in college or vocational endeavors," said Steve Odland, CEO of CED.
CED believes that business leaders can be strong supporters of high standards and an aligned education system by clarifying what the Common Core Standards are and are not. As the primary consumer of the education system, business leaders can meet with state and local policymakers, business leaders and other constituents to help educate stakeholders about the economic and civic benefits of higher standards.
CED will kick-off its announcement today with a panel discussion of industry, education, and policy leaders around college-and career-readiness at its Fall Policy Conference in New York City.
"The American education system and economy are indivisibly linked," said Odland. "It is imperative that we help ensure the successful implementation of higher standards and an aligned education system in order for the marketplaces of today and tomorrow to thrive."
With the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CED will collaborate with business leaders from various sectors in the 45 states that have adopted the CCSS. Working in partnership with national organizations and policymakers in state capitals, CED will host events across the country to amplify the economic and civic perspective of business in support of CCSS.
