C&D Auto Sales diversifies with U-Haul in car-crazed Dalton

Manager Gary "Chip" Chambers is in his seventh year of serving customers in Georgia after eight years of running C&D Auto Sales in Florida. Chambers has been self-employed 30 years and dabbled in several career fields. He previously worked in the ice-cream business and owned a sub shop.

"In high school I went to a business class and the first thing they taught us was how to write a resume and fill out a job application," Chambers recalled. "I said, 'I must be in the wrong class because I don't want a job. I want to be the boss.'"

Just as Chambers' career evolved, so has the car industry. People are keeping their cars longer, making it harder to sell cars. C&D Auto Sales' busiest time comes during the tax season.

"The business is either busy or boring. There is no in between," Chambers said.

Becoming a U-Haul neighborhood dealer and one-stop shop for truck, trailer and towing needs not only allows Chambers to meet customer demand, but it offers his business a chance to boost its bottom line.

Chambers compares his quiet family community to the quaint town of Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show.

"If I was younger I would hate it because there is nothing to do," he said. "Now I have slowed down and I'm ready to sit on the porch."

Finding time to sit on the porch can be a bit tricky between C&D Auto Sales and Chambers' five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

One of Chambers' favorite hobbies – collecting unique items to pin on the walls of his business – is on constant display. Customers seem to enjoy examining all the material when they are signing contracts to purchase cars or rent U-Haul trucks.

"Eventually I want to cover the walls completely with stuff," Chambers said.
