CCRM Develops New Embryo Culture Media That Improves IVF Success Rates

DENVER, May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine (CCRM) has developed a new embryo culture media, the nutrient-rich solution used to grow embryos, improving in vitro fertilization success rates. This exclusive media is only available to clinics in the CCRM Network.

"Most fertility clinics purchase their media from commercial companies, which is often formulated for mice, not humans," said Rebecca Krisher, Ph.D., CCRM research director. "Since we are a research group working in close collaboration with a fertility clinic, we can optimize our solution based on human embryo physiology."

Using this culture media system, we are able to achieve greater than 50 percent good quality blastocyst development from normally fertilized eggs. Significantly more blastocysts develop on day five (almost 30 percent) compared to commercially available culture media; these embryos are the highest quality blastocysts. In particular, this system is beneficial to patients 35 years of age and older, resulting in an increase in blastocyst development of 15 percent in this group of patients.
