CCRKBA Blasts Suggestion That More Gun Control Needed In Baltimore
BELLEVUE, Wash., May 28, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today said a White House suggestion that more gun control is one solution to the kind of violence that rocked Baltimore over the holiday weekend in that city's continuing unrest is "simply ludicrous."
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was quoted by various news sources suggesting that stricter gun regulation might be necessary to stem the violence that claimed nine lives last weekend in Baltimore.
"Obviously there's some common sense things we could do – certainly passage of some gun safety laws in Congress that could keep guns out of the hands of criminals would be one thing that we could do to try to limit the violence," Earnest reportedly stated.
CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said the notion that more gun control would solve the problem shows just how out-of-touch with reality the administration is on violent crime.
"The White House is a nut house if anyone in this administration seriously believes that more gun laws will reduce urban violence in Baltimore or anywhere else," Gottlieb stated. "To even make such an argument is simply ludicrous. Maryland already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, and yet Baltimore was a free fire zone over the weekend, and part of that can be attributed to police paralysis over recent unrest that has had a chilling effect on law enforcement that had been told to 'stand down' recently while a riot erupted.
"This proves that the Obama administration is stacked with people who have lost their one-track minds when it comes to gun rights," he continued. "Obviously, their definition of gun control is to destroy the Second Amendment, and right now, Baltimore has bigger problems that won't be solved by trampling gun rights.
"In Maryland," Gottlieb observed, "it is nearly impossible for average law-abiding citizens to carry firearms for self-protection. Last weekend's mayhem was the handiwork of dangerously irresponsible people using guns illegally when police officers have been made afraid to respond forcefully, and for a White House spokesman to suggest that more gun laws would be one solution isn't common sense, it's nonsense."
With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (www.ccrkba.org) is one of the nation's premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.
