Cato Reports May Same-Store Sales Up 3%
CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Cato Corporation (NYSE: CATO) today reported sales of $80.9 million for the four weeks ended May 29, 2010, a 4% increase over sales of $78.1 million for the four weeks ended May 30, 2009. Same-store sales for the month increased 3%.
Sales for the seventeen weeks ended May 29, 2010 were $340.7 million, an 8% increase over sales of $316.2 million for the seventeen weeks ended May 30, 2009. The Company's year-to-date same-store sales increased 6%.
"May's same-store sales benefited from the post-Memorial day week of lower sales shifting from May to June this year," commented John Cato, the Company's Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. "June's same-store sales could be negatively impacted due to this shift."
During the month of May, the Company opened two new stores, relocated one store and closed one store. New stores opened in Clarksdale, MS and Goldsboro, NC and the relocated store is in Wilson, NC. As of May 29, 2010, the Company operated 1,273 stores in 31 states, compared to 1,285 stores in 31 states as of May 30, 2009.
