Bearing Witness, which has been cited by the Vatican as one of the most important programs in improving relations between Catholics and Jews, allows participants to explore the history of anti-Semitism from biblical times to the modern day, including the role of the Church during the Holocaust; recent changes in Catholic teaching on Jews and Judaism; issues of prejudice in contemporary society; and practical strategies for teaching students about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. The Catholic school teachers will participate in sessions led by prominent scholars, theologians, and rabbis.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, is a Holocaust survivor who survived the war as a hidden child in the care of his family's Polish Catholic nursemaid. "This is a historic program," stated Mr. Foxman. "Over sixty years after the Holocaust, Catholic schools are taking concrete and meaningful steps towards ensuring that the next generation of young people will understand the terrible implications of anti-Judaism, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust."
Since its inception as a regional program in Washington, D.C., Bearing Witness has trained nearly 1,400 Catholic school educators across North America, impacting an estimated 200,000 students.
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
