Catholic Health Association Welcomes Dr. Donald Berwick as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
WASHINGTON, July 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) applauds President Obama for appointing Dr. Donald Berwick as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
"We agree that the administration needs Dr. Berwick in place now as CMS chief in order to work on the mandates created under the health care overhaul, especially since CMS has not had a permanent administrator since 2006," stated Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, the association's president and chief executive officer.
CHA recently joined with other hospital groups to publicly support Dr. Berwick, who "is well qualified to implement provisions of the recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act," Sr. Carol said. "Dr. Berwick is a visionary with great insight and knowledge of the health care delivery system based on his perspectives as a physician and teacher, as well as being a decades' long champion for safe, effective high-quality care."
The Catholic health ministry looks forward to working with Dr. Berwick in his new position. "The task ahead is critically important for patients, their families and communities as CMS and providers collectively tackle the issues of expanding coverage, drafting regulations, developing payment policies and prioritizing patient safety and quality," Sr. Carol added.
The Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA), founded in 1915, supports the Catholic health ministry's commitment to improve the health status of communities and create quality and compassionate health care that works for everyone. The Catholic health ministry is the nation's largest group of not-for-profit health systems and facilities that, along with their sponsoring organizations, employ more than 750,000 women and men who deliver services combining advanced technology with the Catholic caring tradition.
