Cataract Patients Benefit From Today's Advanced Technology
Aging of Baby Boomers Generation Creates Unprecedented Demand for Cataract Surgery
June Recognized as National Cataract Awareness Month
SAN DIEGO, June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a report released by Prevent Blindness America, a national nonprofit organization, more than 24 million adults in the United States suffer from cataracts, a condition that clouds the lens and prevents or changes the light that passes into the eye. Cataract surgery ranks as the most common surgical procedure, with nearly 19 million procedures performed each year worldwide. The United States accounts for the second highest number of cataract surgery procedures per country, with 3.6 million performed annually, and this number is forecast to grow as the world population continues to age. With the month of June designated as National Cataract Awareness Month, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman - a renowned ophthalmologist and corneal expert at Clearview Eye & Laser Center in San Diego – encourages patients to pay special attention to any unusual changes in their vision and to consult with their physician if they detect any abnormalities or changes in their eyesight.
"Having cataracts can be life-altering, but the good news for patients is that they no longer have to suffer from the debilitating effects of this disease. With today's technological advancements, patients can choose to correct their vision with the most cutting-edge procedures that involve little or no discomfort, yet yield highly effective results," said Dr. Feldman. "The aging of the 'baby boomer' generation has truly created an unprecedented demand for cataract surgery. These patients tend to lead healthy active lifestyles and don't want cataracts to slow them down."
With more than two decades of experience in treating patients with cataracts and other eye diseases, Dr. Feldman specializes in a new procedure known as computer-guided laser cataract surgery – utilizing the state-of-the-art Catalys Precision laser system – to clear cloudy vision and restore visual freedom. This advanced laser surgery involves 3D imaging, provides little or no discomfort, and paves the way for customized treatment during the procedure.
Beyond utilizing cutting-edge techniques, Dr. Feldman advises patients to take a proactive approach to recognize and treat any symptoms of cataracts at their onset. While there are no guaranteed methods to help prevent cataracts, Dr. Feldman suggests the following strategies in order to help slow the progression of this disease:
- Wear sunglasses – Wearing sunglasses protects the eyes from the sun's potentially harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Research has shown that UV rays can contribute to the development of cataracts.
- Eat a healthy diet – Studies have shown that a healthy dose of fruits and vegetables play an important role in maintaining good vision, as fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that are integral to healthy eyes.
- Take your vitamins – In a recent study, researchers at Harvard discovered that taking multivitamins reduced the risk of cataracts, especially for men.
- Manage other health issues – Individuals who suffer from diabetes or other health conditions are at an increased risk for developing cataracts, so managing these conditions is a key step in cataract prevention.
- Have regular eye checkups – One of the most important elements to optimal eye health are regular eye examinations. A physician can detect cataracts or other eye conditions at their earliest stages, which is important for devising an appropriate treatment plan.
