Catamaran's Mark Thierer Elected PCMA's New Board Chairman
RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif., Oct. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mark Thierer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Catamaran was elected today Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association's (PCMA) Board of Directors at PCMA's Annual Meeting. In addition to becoming the new Board Chairman, Mr. Thierer was also a keynote speaker at the two-day event which features healthcare leaders discussing the latest industry trends and information.
"As the new Chairman of the Board for PCMA, we are excited to have Mark Thierer's dynamic leadership and perspective on the important pharmacy issues we face as an industry," said PCMA President and CEO Mark Merritt. "Mark will build on the progress we've achieved during the past year under the leadership of our outgoing PCMA Board Chairman, George Paz, Chairman, President and CEO of Express Scripts."
In his address at PCMA's annual meeting, Mr. Thierer called on the association to continue to advocate for PBM innovative pharmacy solutions that not only reduce costs for health plans, employers, labor unions, states and other payers, but improve the health and well-being of the nation's citizens through enhanced access to comprehensive medical and essential pharmacy benefits.
"PCMA's voice in driving improved health outcomes through expanded access to safe, effective, and affordable prescription drugs is especially important in today's landscape of cost challenges and increasing chronic disease," said Mr. Thierer. "PCMA's value proposition is one Catamaran is strongly committed to especially as we navigate through the very unpredictable year ahead."
Mr. Thierer has been instrumental in redefining the way pharmacy benefits are managed by successfully merging two industry-leading PBMs — SXC Health Solutions and Catalyst Health Solutions — to create Catamaran, a $13 billion company scaled to drive significant client savings, with a service offering wrapped in flexibility, agility and a client-centered philosophy.
Mr. Thierer has a nationally recognized track record of performance leading organizations to financial and operational success. He joined SXC in 2006 as President and Chief Operating Officer and was named President and CEO in 2008, and CEO and Chairman of the Board in 2011. Prior to joining SXC, Mr. Thierer led the evolution of Physicians Interactive, a division of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions Inc. Mr. Thierer also spent 10 years with Caremark Rx, now CVS Caremark Corporation as a corporate officer and key executive in growing the company into a market-leading PBM and specialty pharmacy company.
PCMA represents the nation's pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), which improve affordability and quality of care through the use of electronic prescribing (e-prescribing), generic alternatives, mail-service pharmacies, and other innovative tools for 210-plus million Americans.
