Catalyst Research Scientist to Keynote DESI VI Workshop Today
Dr. Jeremy Pickens to Present New Research on the Use of Artificial Intelligence and TAR in E-Discovery and Information Governance at Leading Global Workshop
DENVER, June 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Jeremy Pickens, senior applied research scientist at Catalyst, will be a keynote speaker today at the DESI VI Workshop on Using Machine Learning and Other Advanced Techniques to Address Legal Problems in E-Discovery and Information Governance, part of the 15thInternational Conference on Artificial Intelligence & Law taking place this week in San Diego.
Discovery of Electronically Stored Information (DESI) is the world's preeminent workshop on the use of machine learning, artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies in e-discovery, information governance (IG) and other legal settings. It brings together researchers and practitioners to explore innovation in and develop best practices for search, classification, language processing, data management, visualization and related techniques.
Dr. Pickens' keynote address, "TAR, Information Governance, and the Relativity of Wrong," will consider the use of technology-assisted review (TAR) in the context of information governance. While TAR and predictive coding have achieved widespread popularity in e-discovery in recent years, they are not yet widely used for IG. Dr. Pickens will discuss how TAR differs in the IG context and whether it can be effective there.
"In this keynote, I will make the argument that both the problem of and solutions to information governance should be viewed along a spectrum, a gamut of suitability, a 'relativity of wrong,'" Dr. Pickens explains. "Even when technologies are not perfect fits, they can still move the gradient. Detecting and moving along that gradient will provide ample challenges and opportunities for years to come."
Spearheads Work on Continuous Active Learning and Insight Predict
Dr. Pickens is one of the world's leading information retrieval scientists and a pioneer in the field of collaborative exploratory search, a form of information seeking in which a group of people who share a common information need actively collaborate to achieve it. Dr. Pickens has seven patents and patents pending in the field of search and information retrieval.
Dr. Pickens spearheaded the development of Insight Predict, Catalyst's next-generation platform for TAR. His ongoing research and development focuses on methods for continuous learning, and the variety of real world TAR workflows that are only possible with this approach. Catalyst has applied for a patent on the type of continuous learning Dr. Pickens developed for Insight Predict.
Dr. Pickens earned his doctoral degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval. He conducted his post-doctoral work at King's College, London. Before joining Catalyst, he spent five years as a research scientist at FX Palo Alto Lab, Inc. In addition to his Catalyst responsibilities, he continues to organize research workshops and speak at scientific conferences around the world.
