WASHINGTON and SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National League of Cities (NLC) and the League of California Cities (LCC) today announced that Carolyn Coleman will join the LCC as the League's new executive director. Coleman, who has served as a senior executive and director of federal advocacy at NLC since 2006, will begin in her new role in mid-December.
"I am humbled by the opportunity to lead the League of California Cities during an important time for America's cities," said Coleman. "The California League has a great legacy and national reputation for providing excellent advocacy and education services for its members, and I look forward to continuing that tradition. I can't wait to get started meeting with California city officials. I also look forward to continuing the strong partnership between the League of California Cities and the National League of Cities."
Coleman has more than 25 years of experience as a leader and an advocate in the public and private sectors, including as deputy mayor for the City of Indianapolis, Indiana. As deputy mayor, she led the administration's initiatives involving metropolitan development, parks and public works and served as the mayor's chief liaison to community-based and neighborhood organizations and their leadership.
"On behalf of the search committee and League of California Cities board, I want to welcome Carolyn to California and the League," said League of California Cities (LCC) President JoAnne Mounce, councilmember of Lodi, California. "Carolyn is a seasoned executive with strong interpersonal skills and management experience in the public and private sectors. The executive search committee spent long hours and invested tremendous energy into interviewing the candidates and deliberating the options. In the end, I feel the committee's hard work has resulted in the best candidate being chosen for the job. Welcome to California, Carolyn!"
Coleman was chosen by an executive search committee and was confirmed by the LCC's board of directors on Friday. She was selected to replace the LCC's former executive director, Chris McKenzie, following a national recruitment conducted by a search committee comprised of the League's executive officers and other members of its board of directors. Coleman is the first woman to serve as the LCC's executive director since its founding in 1898.
"The League of California Cities has selected a strong leader whose professional career has been dedicated to making cities better for all of their residents," said National League of Cities CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony. "We will miss Carolyn, but we look forward to working with her in her new capacity on the issues that matter to cities in California and across the nation."
During her time leading NLC's advocacy efforts, Coleman has worked with six U.S. Congresses, two presidential administrations and the U.S. Supreme Court to advance the federal policy priorities established by NLC's membership.
In addition to her public sector experience, Carolyn also has practiced law and held marketing leadership positions in the private sector.
