PITTSBURGH, Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Carnegie Mellon University will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the merger of the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Mellon Institute with a weekend of events Nov. 10-11, 2017, on the university's Pittsburgh campus.
The 50th anniversary celebration, "For the Founders," honors those throughout Carnegie Mellon's history and present who have helped shape the institution into a world leader in education and innovation.
"Carnegie Mellon was founded with the extraordinary philanthropy and vision of our founders, Andrew Carnegie and Andrew and Richard Mellon," said Interim President Farnam Jahanian. "As a relatively young institution, we have come far and accomplished much in a very short period. We have pursued world-changing innovation, big ideas and bold creations. This year we pay tribute to both the founders who created this world-class institution, as well as the founders who have transformed education, society and the world every day since."
The highlight of the weekend will be the two-day Founders Exposition, an interactive, forward-looking, hands-on showcase of prominent CMU faculty and researchers whose leading-edge activities, works of art and creative problem-solving impact daily life and will revolutionize the next 50 years.
On Friday, Nov. 10, students, faculty, staff and alumni will commemorate the merger with the grand opening of the Expo; an exhibition featuring emerging student-led projects across a variety of fields; academic panels and lectures, including an address by former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx; and a convocation featuring keynote speaker Thomas Friedman, The New York Times foreign affairs columnist, bestselling author and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner.
The Pittsburgh community is invited to campus on Saturday, Nov. 11, between 11 a.m.-5 p.m., to explore the Founders Exposition and participate in CMU's Homecoming festivities.
