Carlson Signs United Nations Global Compact Encouraging Sustainable, Socially Responsible Business Policies
MINNEAPOLIS, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Carlson, a global hospitality and travel company with operations in more than 150 countries, today announced that Carlson President and Chief Executive Officer Hubert Joly has signed the United Nations Global Compact.
The initiative encourages businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies supporting 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption, and can be found at www.unglobalcompact.org.
Carlson is one of the first global hospitality and travel companies to become part of the compact, the world's largest corporate citizenship initiative. It was first announced in Davos by then-U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan in January 1999, and it was officially launched at the U.N. headquarters in New York in July 2000.
"Signing the global compact is our company's next, logical step in helping to address complex issues facing the world," Joly said. "It builds on our rich legacy as an organization that seeks to conduct its business in a socially responsible and caring fashion."
In 2008, Joly was among 100 influential CEOs who endorsed a comprehensive climate change plan supporting adoption of a rapid and fundamental strategy by governments around the world to bring about a low-carbon world economy.
In 2004, Carlson became the first North American hospitality and travel company to sign the ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) global code of conduct to protect children from sexual exploitation.
