PASADENA, Calif., July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From October 17-18, the Green California Schools Summit and the Green California Community Colleges Summit will be held concurrently at the Pasadena Convention Center. Green Technology, which organizes the events, has announced that Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Chairman and Co-Chair of the newly-formed BlueGreen Alliance, will be the keynote speaker.
In addition to launching some of the nation's largest green building and renewable energy projects, California's community colleges are central to efforts to train workers for the state's growing green economy. Engagement begins even earlier, and includes efforts to increase environmental literacy – including the implementation of the state's new Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) curriculum for grades K-12.
Through his position at the Sierra Club and his involvement with the BlueGreen Alliance, Pope has long worked at the heart of these issues. In May, the BlueGreen Alliance merged with the Apollo Alliance "to build a stronger movement to create good jobs and produce clean energy in the 21st century economy." Earlier in the year, the Alliance launched the Jobs21! campaign, a nine-state initiative, including California, to bring together union members and environmentalists to promote the creation of good jobs through investments in the clean energy economy.
The Green Schools and Green Community Colleges summits offer a rare opportunity to learn about not just job development, but all aspects of greening schools and campuses - from funding, to new building technologies, to implementing green curriculum. Leaders from schools and community colleges will be able to network to explore the important linkages between K-12 and higher education. An Expo serving both events will feature over 100 companies with green products and services.
The Summit will also include a one-day Green Curriculum Institute for teachers, curriculum supervisors and other educators focused on the EEI. The EEI is a full environmental curriculum comprised of 85 units covering science and history-social science academic standards created by the California Environmental Protection Agency and formally approved by the State Board of Education for use in classrooms statewide. Green Technology has formed a partnership with CalEPA to help forward EEI implementation.
At a reception on October 17, Leadership Awards will be presented to schools and community colleges in recognition of achievements in green building, energy, curriculum and other categories.
