Carillon Technologies Finalizes Exclusive License to RF Metamaterial Technology for Key Government Applications
ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Carillon Technologies today announced completion of a license to Metamaterial Radio Frequency (RF) antenna technology for key government and military applications. This license includes exclusive rights in custom government satellite communications, directed energy, electronic warfare, signals intelligence and specialized RF imaging applications.
Dr. David Smith, Professor at Duke University and one of the inventors of metamaterial technology, said, "Metasurface antennas are one of the major advances in RF technology of our generation. The technology enables dynamic beam forming comparable to phased array antennas, but at an order-of-magnitude lower cost, reduced system complexity, and drastically reduced power draw. Metasurface antennas achieve these gains by eliminating phase shifters, one of the more expensive, power hungry and space-consuming components of phased array antennas. The essentially passive metasurface architecture promises to have a profound impact on the cost and capabilities of RF systems, including radar, communications, imaging and general sensing."
Metamaterials Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) technology – also known as metasurface antennas and Holographic Electronically Scanned Arrays (HESAs) – will enable new and innovative applications involving low-cost, expendable military assets. Their low power and lightweight characteristics are ideally suited to tactical communications, directed energy, radar, attritable electronic warfare (EW) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) systems, and UAV applications.
Based in Arlington, Va., Carillon Technologies is led by CEO Dr. John D. Evans. Before founding Carillon, Evans served as Lockheed Martin's Corporate Vice President for Technology and Innovation, where, in addition to national security priorities, he was responsible for commercial areas such as autonomous systems and health care. He has served on the boards of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the Innovation Research Interchange (IRI).
"Carillon's mission is to serve as an interface between commercial and defense markets, identifying, adapting, and inserting cutting-edge commercial technologies on critical government programs," said Evans. "Carillon's exclusive access to metamaterial technologies for key government applications will enable us to more rapidly adapt the technology for government applications and transition the technology to prime contractors. This will help maintain America's traditional technology overmatch, create new American jobs, and ensure that those who serve America have access to the same technologies that Americans enjoy in their homes and businesses every day."
