DEARBORN, Mich., May 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Carhartt, America's legendary work wear brand since 1889, today hosted an appreciation barbeque at Roosevelt Park for Detroit's hard-working police and firefighters with a special appearance from Detroit Lions Running Back, Reggie Bush. Top Chef Masters winner and Michigan native Chef Douglas Keane supported this massive effort to grill 500 steaks simultaneously setting a world record in the process.
"Today's event was really about honoring Detroit's hard-working police and firefighters with a record setting steak barbeque to match our gratitude for all they do," said Tony Ambroza, senior vice president of marketing at Carhartt. "At Carhartt, we believe in working hard, but we also believe that hard work deserves a reward. As a Michigan-based company celebrating our 125th anniversary this year, we wanted to shine a light on the city where our fourth-generation, family-owned company was born."
The world-record-setting grilling effort was led by celebrity Chef Douglas Keane who accomplished this feat by directing 16 grilling assistants to "man" 80-feet of grilling space by grilling 500 steaks simultaneously, a world record certified by RecordSetterSM. Detroit's first responders enjoyed a lunch prepared with fresh ingredients from a variety of Michigan-based companies and a special appearance by Detroit Lions Running Back, Reggie Bush who took photos with barbeque attendees.
"Coming home is always the best feeling and it's an honor to participate in this record-setting event," said Chef Keane. "Carhartt, the Detroit Fire Department and the Detroit Police Department are all examples of 'Great Things That Come From Detroit' and I'm proud to have been a part of this."
Post event, Carhartt will donate 40-feet of the heavy-duty stainless steel grill to Roosevelt Proxy, the student group comprised of Western International students and Lawrence Tech University masters students who are working to re-design and re-energize Detroit's Roosevelt Park. This summer, the donated grills, designed by Michigan-based Quality Grills, Inc., will be permanently installed in the park so the community can continue to gather together and enjoy using them.
"Detroit is our home and we'll continue to support community revitalization efforts," Ambroza further adds. "We were honored to host the city's first responders today and celebrate the hard work they do each day."
