MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cargill, a leader in the U.S. deicing market, is helping buyers make better purchasing decisions by disclosing product ingredients — as well as the percentages of all melting ingredients — on its Diamond Crystal® ice melter packaging.

The disclosure is part of a broader effort Cargill is undertaking to inform buyers and users about ingredient performance, based on established Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) test data. This data, combined with ingredient disclosure, enables a buyer to evaluate and verify product claims and performance.
"Purchase criteria such as minimum ice melt temperatures, as well as understanding melting ingredients and their capabilities, are crucial in order to make the correct and best ice melter buying decision. Without this information, buyers are left to make purchase decisions without knowing the exact makeup of the ice melting product they choose," says Bob O'Connell, Cargill Salt. "We at Cargill know that the most important information should be included on our Diamond Crystal ice melter packaging, with additional information made accessible on our website and in product literature."
New Diamond Crystal® GreenMelt® Ice Melter
The new Diamond Crystal GreenMelt blended ice melter is the first Cargill ice melter to include ingredient amounts and percentages clearly on the package; this information is gradually being introduced product by product during the 2010-2011 season.
The new GreenMelt ice melter now works down to -5 degrees Fahrenheit and is tinted green for easy-to-see coverage on ice and packed snow. It offers a commercial strength blend of fast-acting calcium chloride and extended-action sodium chloride for a more economical one-two punch than calcium chloride alone. This combination gives sidewalk and parking lot crews a critical 20-minute jump-start from the calcium chloride, coupled with 60-plus minutes of extended melting action from the sodium chloride.
A complete family of ice melter solutions
The new GreenMelt ice melter rounds out Cargill's complete line of packaged deicing products for janitorial and maintenance industry professionals. Buyers and users can now choose from the following products:
- Diamond Crystal® Winter Melt® Ice Melter – A mixture of large and small crystals of natural sodium chloride. Small crystals melt on contact and large crystals provide longer-lasting melting action and traction. Works best at 5 degrees F (-15 degrees C) and above.
- Diamond Crystal® Dyn-O Melt® Ice Melter – A three-component blend of magnesium chloride, diammonium phosphate and sodium chloride works down to 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) to inhibit metal corrosion.
- Diamond Crystal® Glacier Melt® Ice Melter – A specially formulated blend of magnesium chloride and sodium chloride for fast action and lower application rates. Works down to – 5 degrees F (-21 degrees C).
- Diamond Crystal® GreenMelt® Ice Melter – A blend of fast-acting calcium chloride and extended-action sodium chloride that works at temperatures down to -5 degrees F (-21 degrees C).
- Diamond Crystal® Flash Melt® Ice Melter – Designed for fast meltdown in sub-zero weather. Pellets give off heat as they dissolve, melting more ice faster at temperatures as low as -25 degrees F (-31 degrees C).
