Career Path in Design Engineering Yields High Job Satisfaction
Advancement Opportunities Key for Retaining Quality Workforce
HANOVER, Md., Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Great news for design engineers and their employers: nine out of 10 are satisfied with their jobs according to an annual survey by Design News in partnership with Aerotek® Inc., a leading provider of recruiting and staffing services.
According to the survey, the high satisfaction rate is largely due to the rewarding and stimulating scope of work in which design engineers are involved. When asked what contributes to job satisfaction, respondents identified "problem solving," "technical challenges" and "opportunity to be creative" as the top three factors – even before salary. On the flipside, lack of room for advancement was cited by design engineers as the top factor impacting dissatisfaction with their current job. While only 8 percent of design engineers report actively seeking a job, 32 percent of respondents report being open to better opportunities.
The importance of career growth and employee development is a point also highlighted in Aerotek's recent Recruit or Retain Report, which showed a positive correlation between employee development and retention.
"The value employees place on professional development and foreseeable career growth is quite apparent in the design engineering field," said Hushedar Mehta, executive director at EASi, a subsidiary of Aerotek providing design and engineering solutions. "The takeaway for hiring managers is to provide workers with a clear path for career advancement – including opportunities for employees to hone their managerial skills – and not rest on the satisfaction design engineers find from exercising their problem-solving, technical and creative skills."
