CAPS Deplores California Supreme Court Ruling Awarding Fee Waiver to Unlawful Alien Students
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The California Supreme Court decision that provides illegal alien students with in-state tuition rates was condemned by the nonpartisan group, Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS).
"This was wrong on so many counts. We are optimistic that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn this, but we really must focus our anger at the California legislature, which cannot balance a budget, but spends millions of dollars on subsidies to those whose very presence in this country is illegal," said Marilyn DeYoung, Chairman of the Board of CAPS.
The tuition discounts cost state taxpayers over $200 million every year. The Legislative Analyst's Office recently said California's budget deficit has grown to $25.4 billion through June 2012. That includes a $6 billion shortfall in the budget package signed last month that was 100 days late, the longest impasse in state history.
"This is quite outrageous. Our infrastructure is crumbling in an overpopulated, financially-strapped California, and the legislature provides an additional $23,000 per year to each illegal, foreign student—a gift that is not available to U. S. citizens in other states," noted DeYoung.
The court ruling in Martinez v. Regents of the University of California upholds AB 540, a 2002 law that allows unlawful aliens to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities if they attended a California high school for at least three years.
CAPS is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that promotes policies designed to stabilize the population of California and the United States at a level that will protect resources and promote a good quality of life for all.
