"The championship season really showcases the perseverance and drive of NCAA student-athletes," said Capital One Cup Advisory Board member, Brandi Chastain, a former student-athlete at Santa Clara University. "The UCLA volleyball team had a tough draw going into the Semifinals and showed heart and determination. They not only took the crown at the Women's Volleyball Championship after a 20 year hiatus, but they also vaulted the school's athletics program to the top of the Women's Capital One Cup standings."
"It's been great to see the engagement of the fans around the Capital One Cup this year," said Capital One Cup Advisory Board member, Doug Flutie. "Fans have been rallying behind their teams whether it's been for the Capital One Cup Impact Performance of the Week or supporting and cheering their respective teams during the regular season and Championships playoffs. This year's race is tight and could end up being a photo finish like last year."
"We've had several spectacular championship games already this season," said Marc Mentry, Senior Vice President of Advertising and Sponsorships at Capital One. "What makes the Capital One Cup so exciting is that the standings can change so quickly and since so many sports are represented, any school has a legitimate shot at winning the trophy."
This is the second year of the Capital One Cup. Schools earn points based on their teams' Top 10 finishes in NCAA Division I championships and in final official coaches' polls across 19 men's and 20 women's sports as they compete to win the Capital One Cup trophy and a combined $400,000 to fund scholarships for student-athletes. The Capital One Cup winners will be determined at the end of the spring season and honored at the ESPY Awards in July. Last year the University of Florida won the men's Capital One Cup and Stanford University claimed the women's Capital One Cup.
