Capital BlueCross Joins Pennsylvania Insurance Department in Celebration of Successful Children's Health Insurance Program

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Capital BlueCross joined with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) and others in the insurance industry to celebrate the 18th birthday of Pennsylvania's successful Children's Health Insurance Program during Cover the Uninsured Week. The event took place at Capital BlueCross headquarters and featured remarks by PID Commissioner Joel Ario and Capital BlueCross Senior Executive Vice President Ron Drnevich.

The Children's Health Insurance Program is a state\federally-funded health insurance program that covers children through age 18 who are not eligible for Medical Assistance and have no other health insurance. It covers regular check-ups, sick visits, inpatient hospital care, immunizations, emergency care, outpatient surgery, dental, vision, hearing and prescription drugs. A child's age and family income determine whether he or she is eligible for the free program, the low-cost program or the at-cost program.

"This event for CHIP is more than a birthday party," said Drnevich. "It is a celebration of the success of a very important program.  One that has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and their families over these past 18 years. A program that has given hope, comfort and most importantly, the gift of good health, to one of our most precious assets – our children."

Capital BlueCross' Caring Foundation for Children was a model for today's state CHIP program. This bi-partisan program borne in Pennsylvania then became the model for the rest of the nation. Capital BlueCross is currently the program's longest standing and largest administrator of CHIP in central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley.

"CHIP is an important health care option for the entire commonwealth," said Drnevich. "We appreciate the continued leadership of the Insurance Department and the support of the other carriers in delivering this program on behalf of the children and families throughout Pennsylvania."

Since the program's inception in 1993, Capital BlueCross has enrolled nearly 123,000 children into the program. Currently, there are more than 23,500 children enrolled.
