Cancer Treatment Centers of America® Earns Two Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) Achievement Awards for Excellence in Innovation and Patient Care
Leading Cancer Hospital Honored with Annual Awards in Multiple Categories
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Eastern Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia earned two Achievement Awards from The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its outstanding efforts to improve health care in the state.
CTCA's entries "Taking Hospital Acquired Pneumonia (HAP) off the Map with a Routine Screen" and "Achieving Operational Excellence in the Oncology Intensive Care Unit" were chosen as award winners for the "In Safe Hands" and "Optimal Operations" categories, respectively. In total, thirteen award recipients were selected from 108 total award submissions, and were chosen for their exceptional work and innovation in areas that affect patients, communities, and employees.
The inpatient nursing team conducted the study "Taking HAP off the Map with a Routine Screen" to identify high risk patients. Noting that the oncology population is especially susceptible to critical illness related to an immunocompromised state, the nurses on the unit implemented the Massey Bedside Swallowing Screen upon admission to the unit from May 2015-May 2016. After careful observation, post-intervention indicated zero cases of Hospital Acquired Pneumonia on the unit.
Nurses in the intensive care unit submitted "Achieving Operational Excellence in the Oncology Intensive Care Unit" with the objective of improving patient care by meeting quality metrics, decreasing hospital acquired infections, and increasing nursing engagement and professional practice. This empowered nurses to take ownership of departmental financials and sought opportunities to decrease expenses such as supply and linen waste.
"We are honored that HAP has recognized our nursing team for the excellent work they do," said Nancy Hesse, president and CEO of CTCA at Eastern. "The team's commitment to high-quality patient care is evident and inspires our entire organization to continue to provide the highest level of clinical and operational excellence for our patients."
"HAP congratulates this year's Achievement Award winners and all entrants for their innovative and creative efforts to transform Pennsylvania's health care landscape." said Andy Carter, HAP president and CEO. "Their work is on the cutting edge of consumer-focused care, and I am proud to recognize this year's winners."
Entries were evaluated by a 12-judge panel. The panelists, drawn from Pennsylvania and across the nation, represented the public and private sectors, health care and business organizations, and investor-owned and nonprofit entities. The Achievement Awards program began during 1978.
