CHICAGO, April 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern) is proud to announce that it has achieved the 2014 Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. CTCA at Midwestern was identified as providing outstanding performance in the delivery of positive experiences for patients during their hospital stay, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
Healthgrades identified top performing hospitals by evaluating patient surveys submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), covering admissions from March 2012 through April 2013. Of 3,582 hospitals considered, 3,000 hospitals met additional clinical quality requirements to be considered for the Healthgrades distinction, and the top 15 percent of this group, 447 hospitals, achieved the award. CTCA at Midwestern was one of 17 hospitals in Illinois to receive recognition.
"It is with great pride that CTCA at Midwestern receives the prestigious Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award," said Scott Jones president and CEO of CTCA at Midwestern. "It's a wonderful tribute to the entire team, across all departments, who work tirelessly to exceed the expectations of our patients and their families by delivering whole person, integrative care in every interaction."
Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance by patient assessments of the organization using 27 different questions that roll up to ten distinct measures. Questions address everything from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms, to factors such as pain management and care provider responsiveness to patient needs. Patients are also asked if they would recommend the hospital to friends or family.
"As consumers are actively participating in their healthcare more, measured performance surrounding patient experience at hospitals is an increasingly important consideration for patients in choosing where to receive their care," said Evan Marks, executive vice president of informatics and strategy at CTCA at Midwestern. "Consumers can rest assured that hospitals achieving the 2014 Healthgrades Patient Experience Award demonstrate a commitment to exceptional focus on the needs of the patient during their stay at the hospital."
The analysis of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys by Healthgrades found that CTCA at Midwestern outperformed the national average in all 10 measures. For example, 87 percent of patients surveyed gave CTCA at Midwestern an overall rating of a 9 or 10 (10 being the highest possible) compared to a 69 percent average for all reporting hospitals in the United States. An overwhelming 91 percent of patients surveyed reported they would recommend CTCA at Midwestern to someone else, compared to a 70 percent average for all reporting hospitals. Additionally, 91 percent of CTCA at Midwestern patients reported that they were given information about what to do during their recovery at home, compared to a national average of 84 percent.
"This year Healthgrades paid particular attention to the impact that patient-provider communication has on patient experience," said Kristin Reed, MPH, Healthgrades vice president of hospital quality programs and author of the study. "Communication is clearly an important factor for patient satisfaction, but it can also be critical to ensuring positive outcomes. We commend hospitals like CTCA at Midwestern for setting the standard for outstanding patient experience."
