LOS ANGELES, Feb. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer Support Community Los Angeles (CSCLA), formerly The Wellness Community, kicks off a year of action and celebration with the Spirit of Community Luncheon, which will be held at the Skirball Cultural Center on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. The event will honor Dr. Susan Love with the Harriet Benjamin Inspiration Award for her decades of service on behalf of breast cancer patients, specifically the 10th Anniversary of the Army of Women, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation's groundbreaking initiative, developed to partner women and scientists to accelerate translational research. Actress, producer, writer and stand-up comedienne Renee Ridgely will be Mistress of Ceremonies. The Spirit of Community Legacy Award will be awarded posthumously to longtime CSCLA supporter and friend, Abby Brown.
"This Luncheon salutes the spirit of camaraderie that invigorates the LA cancer care community and is a powerful reminder that CSCLA has been a pillar of support for so many," said Julia Forth, CEO of CSCLA. "We're thrilled to be honoring the visionary Dr. Susan Love, whose dedication to research and educating women about breast health has gone hand-in-hand over the years with CSCLA's commitment to providing support, education, and the assertion that patients and families benefit both psychologically and physically from psychosocial support."
Susan M. Love, MD, MBA, has dedicated her career to the eradication of breast cancer. As chief visionary officer of Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, she oversees an innovative research program centered on breast cancer cause and prevention. She is also a clinical professor of surgery at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. One of the founders of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, Dr. Love is well known as a trusted guide to women worldwide through the Foundation's ImPatient Science® education program and her books, including Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, now in its sixth edition, and the Health of Women (HOW) Study®, an online cohort study aimed at identifying the cause of breast cancer.
As part of an international affiliate system, CSCLA has helped to empower 1M people per year to make informed cancer-related health decisions, forever changing the way they live, love, learn and work. CSCLA proudly serves thousands of individuals at its flagship location and through partnerships across the city, inclusive of all gender identities, sexual orientations, races and cultures.
"Since we opened our doors in Santa Monica, we've made incredible progress—and we're just getting started," said Ms. Forth. "We're more determined than ever to expand access to care and education for those in need, growing partnerships with local hospitals to support the medical community and their patients."
The Spirit of Community Luncheon will benefit CSCLA's free-of-charge services and programs and will feature an intimate boutique of designer items presented by local retailers, including floral arrangements for purchase just in time for Mother's Day.
