Canary, LLC Wants to Know: Are You Ready for a Crude Conversation?
Canary, LLC launches educational awareness campaign surrounding crude oil export ban
DENVER, Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Oct. 27, at the intersection of New York Avenue and 6th Street N.W., Washington D.C. got a facelift when a billboard was encircled by a bold yellow banner with the social media hashtag challenging passersby to #talkcrude.
No, the banner isn't advocating for the right to swear like sailors—"talk crude" is the slogan for Canary, LLC's latest awareness campaign, which is educating the public about the crude oil export ban.
The crude oil export ban was instated during the Arab Oil Embargo of the 1970s and prohibits U.S. producers from exporting crude oil, except in very specific circumstances. Currently, there's a hot debate in Washington about whether the United States still needs this law, especially considering that the U.S. recently surpassed Saudi Arabia in oil production.
Proponents of lifting the ban predict it will generate more than 300,000 jobs, save American consumers over $5.8 billion, and increase gross domestic product by more than $38 billion in the next 20 years. Opponents worry that exporting crude will increase gas prices and limit U.S. energy independence.
"We support lifting the ban and find opponents' concerns mostly unfounded," says Dan K. Eberhart, Canary's CEO. "But most importantly, we're for people knowing there is a ban. In our own polling, we found that 73 percent of people are unaware the ban exists."
Lifting the ban (or not) can have global implications on international alliances and OPEC politics, and significant local effects on the economy and U.S. gas prices. So, it's an issue Canary feels the public should take the time to learn about.
The Washington D.C. advertisement is far from the only aspect of Canary's awareness campaign. The company has created one of the largest – if not the largest – sources of online content on the topic, including original interviews with experts like economists Stephen Brown, Thomas Tunstall, Detlef Hallerman, and Rep. Joe Barton, (R-TX).
Canary has published an in-depth analysis of how lifting the ban could affect U.S. gasoline prices as well as the only complete listing of those in favor of and against lifting the ban.
In addition, those in favor of lifting the ban can sign a petition at canaryusa.com/talkcrude.
And for those not in favor? "I honestly want to promote healthy conversation," says Eberhart. "Look me up on Facebook at Dan K Eberhart and you'll see a pretty active, and sometimes heated, discussion. That's good. That's what America is supposed to be about."
Congress could make a decision about the ban as early as 2015. Before that date, Canary is going to make sure that as many people as possible have a chance to talk crude.
