Canadians Can Donate to the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation Nepal Earthquake Rebuild Fund at Sears Canada
Visit Sears Stores or Call Toll-free 1-800-26-SEARS
TORONTO, April 28, 2015 /CNW/ - Sears Canada Inc. (TSX: SCC; NASDAQ: SRSC) is making it easy for Canadians to help the people of Nepal rebuild following the devastating earthquake by accepting donations to the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation of Canada (SEHF) at all Sears retail stores across Canada, and by phone by calling Sears toll-free number, 1-800-26-SEARS, beginning Wednesday, April 29 through Monday, May 4.
In-store, donations in denominations of $1 or $10 may be made by cash, on a Sears Financial credit card or on any other major credit card. A tax receipt will be issued by the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation of Canada for donations of $10 or more made on a Sears Financial credit card, as Sears can only pass on information to SEHF from Sears Financial credit card holders, with their permission. By phone, only credit cards may be used, and receipts will be handled in the same way.
Donations collected will be sent to the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation Nepal Earthquake Rebuild Fund. Sears Canada is also making a corporate donation based on what its customers and team members donate.
"On behalf of Sears Canada, I want to extend my heartfelt wishes to the people affected by the earthquake in Nepal, in particular the people in the Solu Khombu region at the base of Mount Everest," said Ron Boire, President and CEO, Sears Canada. "Sears Canada's relationship with the late Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, goes back to 1972 when we partnered with him to sell Hillary-approved camping gear, and then later through the founding of the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation of Canada in 1976 and subsequently through the support of the foundation's work over the last 40 years to improve the quality of life of the Sherpa people of Nepal."
"The funds raised through Sears Canada retail stores and toll-free number will help the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation of Canada rebuild the homes, schools and hospitals in remote mountain villages in Nepal that have been impacted by the recent earthquake," said Zeke O'Connor, Founder and Executive Director, Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation of Canada and retired Sears Canada executive. "When I co-founded this organization with Sir Edmund Hillary we wanted to make a positive contribution to the peaceful and hardworking Sherpas living in the Nepal region, and today I want to thank Sears Canada and its customers for its continued commitment to our work."
