Canadian Man Raises $1,000,000 For Cancer Clinical Trials Through Crowdfunding

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Matthew Schreindorfer is YouCaring's first Canadian member to raise $1 million on the site. His story helps prove that anyone can use crowdfunding to reach their financial goal through work and community support.

After being diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Matthew started a fundraiser on YouCaring (www.youcaring.com) and raised over $835,000 with the support of donors from across the globe. Matthew received the treatment needed to save his life, but unfortunately his crowdfunding journey didn't end there.

Matthew's cancer returned. He needs to raise $700,000 to participate in a clinical trial with a 85 to 95 percent remission success rate. Without hesitation, Matthew and his wife, Katia, created a second fundraiser on YouCaring because they had great success using the free crowdfunding site.

Raising over $1 million didn't happen overnight. Matthew and his community have started multiple social media profiles and launched a blog to document his journey. Matthew also started the Knockout Leukemia Challenge to raise awareness for his cause, "We tried to think outside the box so we had different angles to raise money, so we're not just asking  people to click on the link [to donate]."

The Knockout Leukemia Challenge (https://helpsavematthew.com/klc/) was launched when Matthew was relearning how to walk. It inspires participants to film themselves running up a flight of stairs to the Rocky Balboa theme song. After posting their video on social media, they must challenge three friends to do the same and donate to Matthew's cause.

"I think people sometimes think that they're just going to start a fundraiser and it's going to work," Matthew explained. "We're working on ours all of the time."
