Canadian Light Source Accelerates Scientific Research With Isilon
Canada's National Synchrotron Research Facility Deploys Isilon Scale-Out Storage to Consolidate File-Based Applications and Virtual Servers, Simplifying Data Management to Reduce Costs and Speed Time-to-Results
SEATTLE, Sept.14 /PRNewswire/ -- Isilon (Nasdaq: ISLN) today announced that Canadian Light Source, Inc. (CLS), Canada's national synchrotron research facility, has deployed Isilon scale-out storage to power its research into the structural and chemical properties of a wide range of natural and manufactured materials. Using Isilon's X-Series, powered by the OneFS® operating system, CLS has consolidated the majority of its file-based user shares and some of its VMware-based servers onto a single file system, simplifying both data and virtual server management. With Isilon, CLS can scale a single storage resource in lockstep with the data-intensive demands of its scientific applications, minimizing capital and operating costs, while accelerating time-to-results for its leading-edge research.
"With demand continuing to increase for our synchrotron-based research, we needed to move away from the complexity and limitations of our traditional SAN to a simpler, more flexible and cost-effective storage solution," said Christopher Angel, IT Systems Analyst, CLS. "Isilon fit the bill, as it not only simplified management and improved application performance, but its scale-out architecture also ensures we'll never need a forklift upgrade again."
CLS is pioneering the use of synchrotron-based research in Canada's scientific community, with synchrotron radiation providing new insights in archeology, materials research, earth sciences and biomedical research. Prior to Isilon, CLS' traditional SAN system complicated data management and limited CLS' ability to scale performance and capacity in-line with application demands.
Working with Isilon channel partner JumpPoint, CLS deployed Isilon scale-out storage to consolidate staff home directories, file-based user shares, project data, and one of its virtual server clusters onto a single, shared pool of storage, simplifying data management to improve application performance and research productivity. Isilon's unique scale-out architecture allows CLS to add or remove nodes in minutes without any downtime or interruption, eliminating the need for disruptive system upgrades and ensuring research continues unabated.
"CLS sits at the leading-edge of harnessing the power of light to gain new insights into the world around us," said Sam Grocott, vice president of marketing, Isilon. "Now, by using Isilon to simplify IT operations and improve research productivity, CLS is setting the standard for best practices in high-performance computing."
About Isilon
As a global leader in scale-out storage, Isilon delivers powerful yet simple solutions for enterprises that want to manage their data, not their storage. Isilon's products are simple to install, manage and scale, at any size. And, unlike traditional enterprise storage, Isilon stays simple no matter how much storage is added, how much performance is required or how business needs change in the future. We're challenging enterprises to think differently about their storage, because when they do, they'll recognize there's a better, simpler way. Learn what we mean at http://www.isilon.com.
