Canadian Human Rights Commission commends TRC for bringing a dark chapter of Canada's history to light
OTTAWA, June 2, 2015 /CNW/ - In light of the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's findings, the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) has issued the following statement:
"We commend the TRC on six years of meticulous, dedicated work to bring the truth of Canada's residential school system out of the shadows and into the light. We salute the courage of the thousands of survivors of the schools who came forward to share their stories.
"TRC Commissioners — Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, Chief Wilton Littlechild and Dr. Marie Wilson — have shown tremendous leadership and compassion over the past six years. Their work in collecting millions of archival records and documenting the testimony of the thousands whose lives were forever changed by their experience in the schools is unprecedented in its scope and reach.
"We welcome the TRC's recommendations and underscore our support for one in particular: that the complete history of the residential schools become a mandatory part of school curricula across Canada.
"The work towards reconciliation is not over. The CHRC remains committed to helping advance reconciliation and promoting the rights of Aboriginal peoples in Canada."
