AARP, U of I, and the Idaho Dept. of Ins. Report on Long-term Care Prices Helps Idahoans Plan & Find the Right Care as They Age
BOISE, Idaho, July 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- $75,000 a year, that's about how much it costs for nursing home care in Idaho – not exactly chump change for elderly residents already living on fixed incomes. Finding the right care at the right price is a challenge for thousands of Idahoans every year. Today, AARP released a new tool to help Idahoans navigate the long-term care maze – the Idaho Price Guide for Long-term Care.
The guide, compiled by AARP, University of Idaho and the Idaho Department of Insurance, compares prices for all Idaho nursing homes, many assisted living facilities across Idaho and explains the options available to help pay for the care. It is also the only comprehensive statewide comparison of long-term care facilities in the state.
"Long-term care prices are soaring both across Idaho and the nation – planning is key to being able to afford the care you or family member need," said Jim Wordelman, State Director for AARP in Idaho. "Many people believe Medicare will cover all of their long-term care costs, when in fact it pays for only a fraction - this guide helps Idahoans and their families plan ahead and know what their payment options are before it's too late."
From Arco to Weiser, the guide details long-term care costs across Idaho and the options to pay for it, some key findings include:
- $75,716 a year, $6,310 a month, or $210 a day is the average cost of private room in a nursing home in Idaho ($71,000/$5,959/$199 for a semi-private room) – it's also more than one and half times the median income in Idaho.
- Care at an assisted living facility will cost between $43,309 (highest average price) to $31,300 (lowest average price) a year.
- $807 is the standard monthly premium for long-term care insurance for people 75 or older, while people 55 and older pay $253 a month.
"Navigating the long-term care maze in Idaho starts with getting the right information, this guide helps people do just that," added Wordelman.
