Legendary goalie Curtis Joseph and Wonderful Pistachios look to put a stop to boring snacking habits during a busy summer in sports
TORONTO, June 16, 2015 /CNW/ - Three in four Canadians plan to watch sports this summer, and 72 percent plan to snack while doing so, according to a recent survey commissioned by Wonderful Pistachios.
"With Canada playing host to world-renowned sporting events, I'm not surprised that sports viewership will be through the roof this summer," said Curtis Joseph, who has the fourth most career wins (454) of any goaltender in NHL history.
"Despite many exciting innovations that have changed the way we watch sports today, including live streaming and mobile devices, most Canadians have not changed their boring snacking habits in decades. It's obvious we are in a snacking rut and overdue for an upgrade," added Joseph, who retired after the 2008-09 season.
The survey further supports this showing that two-thirds (66%) of Canadian "sport snackers" agree that snacks have not changed over the years, and almost half (46%) say sports snacks are in need of an upgrade.
"Sports create an incredible amount of excitement and tension, and the millions of Canadian fans who watch them are often on the edge of their seats," added Joseph, who often saved his best performances for tense playoff games. "As a sports fan, my snack of choice is Wonderful Pistachios – I find that the repetitive action of cracking open the nut is a stress-reliever, and helps take the edge off any spectator anxiety I'm feeling."
When asked what they were looking for in a snack, one in three Canadians surveyed agreed with "Cujo," saying they too wanted a crunchy snack to combat spectating nerves. In addition, 64 per cent said they seek salty snacks to satisfy cravings and 55 per cent seek flavourful snacks to tickle their taste buds.
"Wonderful Pistachios are the perfect companion when watching sports because the act of cracking the nut serves as a social ritual when cheering on your favourite team or athlete, and may help calm jittery nerves too," said Alisa Pospekhova, Brand Manager, Wonderful Pistachios at The Wonderful Company. "Canadians love watching sports, and selecting a snack that's tasty, fun and substantial makes the viewing experience all the better."
Wonderful Pistachios offer a snack that is both tasty and engaging with four unique flavours— Roasted Salted, Unsalted, Sweet Chili and Salt & Pepper. Wonderful Pistachios are available at grocery stores across Canada, including Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys, Walmart, Overwaitea, Costco and others.
About the survey
From April 22 to April 23, 2015 an online survey was conducted among 1,004 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to education, age, gender and region (and in Quebec, language) Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
