Campaign to Fix the Debt Hosts National Fly-In
With fall budget issues quickly approaching, national voices converge on Washington, D.C. for meetings with Members of Congress
WASHINGTON, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tomorrow, July 17, 2013, members of state chapters of the Campaign to Fix the Debt will convene for a day on Capitol Hill, meeting directly with Members of Congress and urging action on the nation's mounting and unsustainable debt.
Nineteen of the twenty-three state chapters will be represented, featuring a diverse set of backgrounds including former Members of Congress, small business owner, community activists, and students. They represent the hundreds of thousands of grassroots activists engaged in the Campaign to Fix the Debt.
"We are excited that over fifty steering committee members are taking time from their busy lives and coming to Washington to meet with Members of Congress. These citizen activists may come from different political parties and have different backgrounds, but they are all united in their belief that Congress and the President need to act on this important issue," said Maya MacGuineas, head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt.
"It remains my goal and the goal of this campaign to carry this message on and let leaders in Washington know that rushed, stop-gap measures like sequestration are not the answer. The time for action is now."
While near-term projections are better than expected, rising health care costs, an aging population, Social Security's looming insolvency, and ever-increasing interest payments will continue to greatly expand the national debt as a share of the economy starting at the end of the current decade.
Those attending the fly-in will take part in a number of campaign-related events, including aforementioned meetings with Members of Congress and a reception that will outline the progress made in the campaign to date and its vision moving forward.
