Camelina Growers Seeing Strong 2010 Harvest Results

BOZEMAN, Mont., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Camelina growers across Montana, North Dakota and southern Canada are wrapping up the 2010 camelina harvest.  Growers who planted proprietary seed varieties developed by Sustainable Oils are seeing strong yields and good harvest conditions.

"We're seeing good product performance across all of our growing areas, with consistent yields from Sustainable Oils camelina varieties across the entire region," said Mike Waring, sales representative for Montana and the Dakotas.

Waring noted that growers producing camelina on contract with Sustainable Oils also benefit from good management practices outlined in the company's camelina production protocol.  The protocol was developed with input from leading researchers and experienced camelina growers and provides guidelines to follow in all stages of production, from planting and fertilizer application to combine settings.

"As a young, first year camelina grower, I'm pleased with the crop's performance this year and its potential to fit in well with my crop rotation," said Wade Fischer, grower from Grenora, North Dakota. "We harvested the crop in August and it has already been picked up from my bins."

A portion of the 2010 camelina crop harvested this month has already left farmers' bins to begin processing to fulfill Sustainable Oils' camelina-based jet fuel contracts with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy.  The remainder will be picked up and processed throughout the fall and winter to coordinate with contract delivery deadlines.  

"I've been impressed with camelina's ability to adapt to the climate conditions in Montana," said Pat Field, a farmer who's grown camelina near Pendroy, Montana, for four seasons.  "The rotation factor is also big, especially with the sawfly pressure we've seen in wheat."

Sustainable Oils has invested in North America's largest camelina research program with a goal of bringing improved camelina varieties to growers even more quickly.  The company's camelina breeding program began in 2005 and has steadily expanded to include more than 32 sites within the U.S. and Canada in 2009.
