CAMDEN, Maine, Dec. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Camden National Bank has announced that Robert D. Merrill has been elected to serve as a member of the board of directors. Merrill is the president of Merrill Furniture in Ellsworth, where he has worked for 35 years, and is a director of Merrill Blueberry Farms.
A Maine native, Merrill was born in Bar Harbor and grew up in Brewer. He attended the University of Maine in Orono and worked summers for Merrill Blueberry Farms while attending school. He received a bachelor's degree in business, majoring in management, and upon graduation began working at Merrill Furniture.
"I look forward to working with everyone at Camden National Bank," said Merrill. "The growth and performance of the bank over the last few years has been remarkable considering our economic climate. We share the same philosophy of giving back to the communities we serve and Camden National Bank has always been a leader in that respect."
By joining the Camden National Bank board of directors, Merrill represents the third generation of his family to serve the bank and its predecessor organizations. Bob's father, Del, and grandfather, Osmon, both served as members of the board of directors of Union Trust, which joined the Camden National family in 2008.
"Bob's success as a local businessperson and his commitment to the Greater Ellsworth community makes him a great addition to the Camden National Bank board of directors," said Karen W. Stanley, chair of the board of directors. "I look forward to serving with him on the Camden National Bank board of directors."
In 2010, Merrill was named the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce 2010 Citizen of the Year. Merrill currently serves on the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce Finance Committee and is secretary of the City of Ellsworth Harbor Commission. Merrill sits on the board of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, for which he formerly served as treasurer, vice chair and chair. He was chair of the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Emergency Department Capital Campaign, and lives in Ellsworth with his wife Susan.
"Bob Merrill joining our board of directors emphasizes our commitment as a community bank which is highlighted by local decision making," said Gregory A. Dufour, president and chief executive officer of Camden National Bank. "Bob's proven capabilities as a businessperson and community leader will provide a great source of advice and counsel to the whole Camden National Bank team."
