Calling All Student App Developers: Third Annual Appreneur Scholarship Competition Now Seeking Entrants
High School, Undergraduate and Graduate Students Enrolled Globally May Apply Now Through November 30, 2015
Winners to Be Recognized by Technology Influencers at CES® 2016 and Receive a $5000 Scholarship
NEW YORK, Sept. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The entrepreneurial mindset of high school, college and graduate students has boomed globally. As part of that expansion, the world's brightest students have been masterfully coding and creating apps that are on the cutting edge of today's mobile technology. For the third year, the Appreneur Scholar award program, sponsored by the Kay Family Foundation and produced by Living in Digital Times, will recognize the creative efforts of these student app entrepreneurs or "appreneurs." High school, undergraduate and graduate students from around the world are now invited to enter the 2016 Appreneur Scholar competition. The deadline to enter is November 30, 2015.
"Our foundation is committed to supporting aspiring entrepreneurs as they work to become tomorrow's leaders of industry," said Elim Kay, president of the Kay Family Foundation. "Our partnership with Living in Digital Times at CES enables us to shine the spotlight on the young minds shaping our digital future."
Two deserving student app creators will each receive a generous $5,000 scholarship funded by the Kay Family Foundation to help them pursue their studies and refine their apps. They will also win a trip to CES® 2016 in Las Vegas (travel and accommodations provided), where they will have the opportunity to show off their apps to an audience of technology influencers. The students will be recognized during the annual Mobile Apps Showdown live show and TransformingEDU conference, both events also produced by Living in Digital Times, on January 8, 2016.
"Now in its third year, the Appreneur Scholarship competition is gaining attention from large institutions like Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)," said Kerry Goldstein of Living in Digital Times, producer of the Appreneur Scholar program. "This widens the applicant pool to find the most innovative young app developers from across the globe."
For the first time, Appreneur Scholar winners will also receive a free membership to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world's largest educational and scientific computing society. This membership also qualifies the students to apply for a scholarship to attend the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), a conference providing a forum for researchers, practitioners and educators in the software engineering field.
Goldstein added, "Students who have received the Appreneur scholarship over the last several years have gone on to accomplish amazing feats."
Brooke Martin, a 2015 Appreneur Scholar who won for iCPooch, went on to pitch her app on "Shark Tank," and win second prize in Microsoft's 2015 Small Business Contest. She is also launching iCLovedOnes, which will allow users to video chat with an aging relative or deliver their medication from anywhere in the world. Learn more about the 2015 Appreneur Scholars here and the 2014 winners here.
The Appreneur Scholar awards recognize the creative efforts of student-built applications running on any of the current mobile app devices including iOS, Android, Windows 8, as well as smartwatches, wristwear, Google Glass and other emerging platforms.
Entrants are evaluated by a panel of judges, which include professional educators, software developers and academicians, based on five main criteria: impact, scalability, originality, user interface and retention. To enter, students must complete the online entry form by the November 30th deadline.
The Kay Family Foundation, founded by Steeve Kay and managed by Elim Kay, looks for creative, entrepreneurial and dedicated students to bestow the award.
