SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The recently released Economic Roundtable Report, "Sinking Underground," confirms that the underground economy in California's construction industry continues to grow and thrive. It further validates this economy's costly impact on families, communities and governments by substantially underpaying and underreporting employees' wages and taxes.
The California Professional Association of Specialty Contractors (CALPASC) and its partners have long supported actions that level the playing field for professional trade contractors. These actions include reforming the enforcement system to ensure violators are punished more quickly and severely; enforcing current labor, tax, employment, licensing and payroll laws; and implementing a comprehensive media campaign designed to expose violators, all of which align with the recommendations from the report. On behalf of law-abiding contractors, these steps and more must be taken to change the trajectory of the growth of the underground economy.
CALPASC members urge a continual spotlight be shown on the fraudulent contractors who intentionally skirt the law and put consumers, as well as employees and their families, at risk while cheating the state out of millions of dollars.
