California State University Selects Unisys Analytics-based Hybrid-Cloud Solution to Transform University-wide Delivery of Institutional Services
Unisys cloud will securely integrate information resources to benefit a half-million students, faculty and staff throughout largest U.S. four-year public university
BLUE BELL, Pa., Sept. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that the California State University (CSU), the largest four-year public university in the United States, has selected the company to implement a secure, system-wide hybrid cloud designed to expand options for services to students, faculty and staff; enhance operational efficiency; and reduce costs.
The CSU expects the hybrid cloud solution to transform the university's Common Management System. That suite of applications provides a wide range of services critical to the administration of the entire university – from student scheduling and registration to human resources and employee compensation – for the approximately 479,000 students and 50,800 faculty and staff at the CSU's 23 campuses and Chancellor's office.
"The Unisys solution creates a secure, analytics-driven cloud environment to integrate our information resources to develop and deliver more innovative educational and administrative services across all 23 campuses quickly and cost-efficiently," said Steve Relyea, executive vice chancellor and chief financial officer for the CSU.
Initially, Unisys will deploy a private cloud for the CSU at a data center in San Jose, California, with the environment expanding over time to include public-cloud services as the CSU's operational and application requirements dictate. A Unisys data center will provide backup and disaster recovery capabilities.
The Unisys solution will include extensive advanced analytics services, with Unisys data scientists capitalizing on university-wide information sources to create predictive models to identify potential new service initiatives and optimize governance and delivery of support services at all campuses.
The automated Unisys Cloud Management Platform (CMP), a software-as-a-service solution, is the fulcrum of the CSU cloud solution. It identifies and allocates private, public and hybrid cloud services as necessary to provide the most effective and cost-efficient resources for a given task. The CMP will draw on all sources of analytical data, including the service catalog of the Unisys-provided service-management system, to discover information on cloud usage that can streamline operations and improve delivery of services while reducing associated costs.
Unisys will also provide analytics-driven managed security services for CSU, to detect, prioritize and neutralize cyber threats arising from both external and internal sources.
"Unisys and the CSU clearly have a common commitment to digital transformation as a vehicle for enhanced student service," said Eric Hutto, senior vice president and president, Enterprise Solutions, Unisys. "We will enable CSU to lead the way in using an analytics-driven, flexible hybrid-cloud environment to understand the needs of all members of the university community and expand its services to enhance the learning process and accelerate students' success beyond their academic experience."
