ONTARIO, Calif., Jan. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Three Prime Healthcare hospitals spanning the Southern California coast received the Healthgrades 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™. Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville and Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in San Diego are among the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
"To rank among the nation's best is thanks to the dedication and efforts of our physicians, nurses and employees, and we are truly honored to be recognized," said Sunny Bhatia, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Prime Healthcare's California and Nevada hospitals. "We believe that quality healthcare should be part of every community, and this recognition should give our Southern California communities comfort that excellent care is close to home."
Nationally, 260 hospitals out of 1485 eligible hospitals were recognized as recipients of the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award. During the 2016 study period (2012-2014), Centinela Hospital, Desert Valley Hospital and Alvarado Hospital showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
Alvarado Hospital Medical Center has received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for the last three years. Desert Valley Hospital was the only hospital in San Bernardino County to receive the Healthgrades award and has received it two years in a row. Centinela Hospital Medical Center has also been recognized for the past three years by Healthgrades for their clinical excellence. All three facilities have received other national quality recognitions including patient safety and critical care excellence.
"Congratulations to the physicians, nurses and staff at these hospitals for their dedication in meeting the highest standards of quality care in the country. We are proud of what this award means to our patients, and our goal is to have every Prime Healthcare hospital achieve this level of excellence," continued Bhatia.
- From 2012 through 2014, Healthgrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence, as a group, had a 26.5% lower risk adjusted in-hospital mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals.
- During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, 158,858 lives could potentially have been saved.
- Patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 32% lower risk of dying from heart failure than if treated at a hospital that did not receive this distinction.
"When it comes to hospital selection, two of the most important questions to consider are where you are most likely to have a complication-free hospital stay and which hospital offers the best chance of survival, both during the hospital stay and in the weeks that follow," said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. "Selecting a hospital that has achieved Healthgrades 2016 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award is one way to be confident that you will receive the right care."
