CALCASA Releases Report On Campus Sexual Assault
Student input drives recommendations for colleges and universities
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) released a report on the issue of campus sexual violence, presenting student recommendations on how colleges and universities can better respond to incidents of sexual assault and support survivors with resources, information, and transparency.
The report was born out of the Student Summit on Sexual Assault that was facilitated by CALCASA in April 2014. Over 50 students participated, representing public and private universities and community colleges. Students led the discussions and created concrete recommendations culminating in a report that will help create responses, policies and protocols that are survivor and student informed, which will contribute to the creation of a campus climate where sexual violence will not thrive.
CALCASA has developed a 3-pronged approach to addressing sexual violence on college campuses, including survivor centeredness, community collaboration and engagement and comprehensive prevention.
"Student voices have been largely missing from the national dialogue about how to develop response systems, resources, policies and prevention programs," said Sandra Henriquez, Executive Director of CALCASA. "Now is the time for this to change."
CALCASA is committed to helping colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools adjust to the new landscape of campus sexual violence. We hope that campuses and communities throughout the country can utilize these recommendations to create more student-centered policies and response programs. For more information on how CALCASA can help, please visit http://www.calcasa.org/resources/publications/ to download the full report and for more details on our technical assistance program.
CALCASA is the only statewide organization in California whose sole purpose is to promote public policy, advocacy, training and technical assistance on the issue of sexual assault. CALCASA has served as a national leader on campus violence (sexual, dating, domestic, and stalking) via our work with the Office on Violence Against Women and the Centers for Disease Control in supporting communities and institutions in addressing and preventing sexual violence on college campuses.
