In his message, Khan says:
"As-salaamu alaykum – Peace Be to You.
"The first national Memorial Day – then called Decoration Day - was observed to honor the sacrifice of those who died in the Civil War, when brother fought brother in a divided nation.
"During that first observance in 1868, in a demonstration of national unity, participants placed flowers on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
"In succeeding generations, America's military personnel have fought and died in conflicts that often divided the nation, but those who died were always honored for their sacrifice, regardless of the politics of the day.
"American Muslims, including my son U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, are among those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"On Memorial Day, families honoring their lost loved ones often lay flowers at gravesides, and following World War I - the 'war to end all wars' - the poppy came to symbolize the sacrifice of the fallen.
"This Memorial Day, let us honor all those who died in our nation's conflicts, and recommit ourselves to unity, liberty, justice, and finally – to an end to all wars."
