CHICAGO, Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CAHG's President & Chief Creative Officer Robin Shapiro has been selected as a 2015 Women of Influence honoree by the Chicago Business Journal (CBJ). CAHG (www.cahg.com) is one of the world's largest healthcare communications companies.
Ms. Shapiro, who was recently promoted to president of CAHG, is one of 46 women recognized this year by the publication that is part of American City Business Journals (ACBJ). Ms. Shapiro is known as a creative visionary, reinventing the way ideas get created from start to finish. CAHG is the creative force behind some of the world's most admired healthcare brands including Gilead's hepatitis C compound, Sovaldi, now recognized as the best launch in pharmaceutical history. Robin is also a devoted mentor to many young people, both inside and outside of the agency.
This is the first year CBJ is honoring women business leaders in the Chicago metropolitan area. Selected by a panel of ACBJ editors, the honorees were chosen based on their achievements in the marketplace, as well as their commitment to community and mentoring and their strong track record in paying it forward.
"Robin fits those criteria perfectly," said Scott Cotherman, CAHG Chief Executive Officer. "She has established herself as a successful and influential mentor to people within and outside the healthcare communications industry. She has selflessly provided to others her time and energy to help them become better leaders when serving in roles as employees, industry peers or students. Her impact upon the success of others is palpable."
Ms. Shapiro mentors high school students from Waukegan, IL, where she has also been instrumental in creating unique programming that helps low and middle income students achieve dreams of higher education by earning life-changing college scholarships.
She felt compelled to take action when she learned that only 8% of students from the bottom income quartile earn a college degree by the age of 24. Said Chuck Gutman, an educational specialist and board member of Waukegan to College, an organization in the Waukegan area focused on programming, scholarships and fundraising for low and middle income students, "Robin is a visionary, a person of action, an expert problem solver, and a wonderful mentor to many Waukegan-area students."
One of her mentees, now a college sophomore, was among only 1,000 students named each year to be a Gates Millennium Scholar that comes with a full scholarship to the college of their choice.
"I love my volunteer life," Ms. Shapiro said. "There is no greater reward than helping a student achieve his or her dream of attending college. It's incredibly rewarding because I know the gift of my time and energy will keep giving. I will never forget when one of my mentees sent me his first grade from college—an 'A'!"
The Women of Influence honorees were announced December 11, 2014 on the CBJ website and will be honored at a lunch on January 20, 2015.
