Early this year the College Board announced a complete overhaul to the current SAT. The SAT has been in use since the early 1900s, and over the last century has been through many revisions in order to evolve with changing times and educational demands. The latest revision of the test will go live in Spring 2016, impacting students that are currently in the 10th grade or below.
How different is the new SAT? Very different, according to David Kim, C2 Co-Founder and CEO. "The new, harder SAT will place more emphasis on critical thinking and real-world problem solving, with a stronger focus on knowledge, skills, and understanding. There is great trepidation around the new test, but we believe it is a positive change, which will better prepare students for the increasingly competitive admissions atmosphere," Kim stated.
Some major differences include a new scoring system with no penalty for incorrect answers, scaled from 400 to 1,600, replacing the old one that ranged from 600 to 2,400. Some think the new scoring system appears to make the test easier; this is a significant misconception. The new math section includes pre-calculus and some parts of the section do not allow a calculator. Test takers will be required to answer context based questions in both the reading and writing areas vs. sentence completion questions found in the old reading section. The new essay portion requires students to analyze the persuasive elements in the passage, although the essay is now optional.
These are just a few of the many differences between the old and new SAT. To learn more about the new, harder SAT and how C2 can help your student master it, visit the company's website at www.c2educate.com.
