Businesses in Connecticut Going Green
Local energy provider MXenergy applauds creation of a "green" chamber of commerce
STAMFORD, Conn., April 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- This spring in Connecticut it's not just the trees and grass turning green but the businesses as well. The region's sustainability movement received a huge boost on Monday with the launch of the "Green Chamber of Commerce" (GCC), an organization created by Bridgeport resident, Shante Hanks to help businesses and individuals take positive steps towards preserving and protecting the environment.
The GCC, which will serve as a network for green businesses, will offer a certification program to ensure a business is taking 10 pre-identified steps necessary for sustainability. Steps include installing sensors for lighting, ensuring computers are powered down when not in use, and evaluating recycling practices. Where necessary the GCC will also help businesses accomplish these goals.
MXenergy Managing Director Marjorie Kass says MXenergy will be one of the first in line to join.
"Since our inception twelve years ago, conservation and sustainability have been fundamental values for this company," says Kass. "The Green Chamber of Commerce is an excellent idea and can serve as a tremendous resource for connecting green companies and helping this movement gain even greater strength in Connecticut."
The Stamford based independent energy provider has increased its environmental commitment this year, expanding its website to include a large portion of information on carbon offsets and sustainable living, creating www.mxearth.com, a website completely devoted to sustainability, and creating MXenergyTV (MXTV), an On Demand cable channel which provides educational programming focused entirely on sustainability and green living. In addition, MXenergy announced on Monday it would provide free carbon offsets for all new customers this week in honor of Earth Day 2011.
"Thinking 'green' is not just a concept that sounds good," continues Kass. "There are tremendous benefits to both businesses and the planet. Companies will find they can save money and improve the environment at the same time. The more we join together the more powerful the sustainability movement will become."
GCC creator Shante Hanks hopes the idea of a green chamber will spread beyond Connecticut's borders and become a national movement.
