Burns & McDonnell Project Earns ACEC Georgia Engineering Excellence Honor Award
Cumming Regional Readiness Center Heralded as Example of Upgrading Military Infrastructures
ATLANTA, Jan. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia (ACEC Georgia) awarded an Engineering Excellence Honor Award to Burns & McDonnell for the newly completed Cumming Regional Readiness Center (RRC) in Cumming, Georgia. Burns & McDonnell provided planning, architectural and engineering design, and construction support services in delivering the $20 million project on schedule and on budget.
Completed in 2013, the 106,200 square-foot Cumming RRC reflects the military's shift to update domestic infrastructure to improve both functionality and readiness postures. Planned, designed and built to meet the needs of the 420th Signal Company, the 230th Support Company and the 560th Battlefield Support Brigade, the Cumming RRC is an example of how innovative engineering can create a dramatic difference in a facility update. The existing RRC was a 20,000 square-foot former pharmacy building that was ill-equipped to serve the needs of a modern military. Now, with a 246-seat auditorium and multiple classrooms, the facility has capacity to accommodate simultaneous training and readiness activities for up to 460 personnel.
"Our team's work on the Cumming RRC reflects our engineering and architectural expertise and our commitment to deliver excellence through every phase of a project," said Shawn DeKold, PE, LEED AP, regional global practice manager, Aviation & Federal, Burns & McDonnell. "Beyond the technical details of a highly functional and aesthetically-pleasing Center, we created an RRC the Guard can be proud of and one that meets the modern needs of their personnel."
With a longstanding tradition of engineering excellence in support of the U.S. military, Burns & McDonnell has completed 22 Readiness Centers throughout the U.S. In Georgia, the Aviation & Federal group is completing new Readiness Centers in Atlanta and Macon; both projects are projected for completion in 2014.
