BOSTON, July 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Burns & Levinson announced today that partner Joseph Maraia has been named to the "Intellectual Property Trailblazers" list by The National Law Journal (NLJ). According to the NLJ, each of the attorneys recognized have "shown a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, having achieved remarkable successes along the way."
Maraia counsels clients in the engineering arts and biotechnology sectors, with particular emphasis on medical devices, LED lighting solutions, semiconductor equipment, power supplies, lasers, image processing devices, optical components, plasma systems, alternative energy technologies, financial services, multimedia, multivariate analysis techniques, and software and telecommunications systems. He assists clients with U.S. and foreign patent and trademark prosecution; proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office as well as copyright prosecution before the U.S. Copyright Office; and patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and unfair competition litigation matters before state and federal courts, including the United States International Trade Commission.
According to the NLJ, Maraia's real world, practical experience gained as a master electrician has helped him focus on the engineering and biotechnology sectors. He has worked on high-level threat detection patents for Raytheon, and an LED light invention patent Lumenpulse. The NLJ noted, "Maraia's background proved valuable when he helped EyeGate Pharmaceuticals develop its patent portfolio, then took the company public in 2015." Looking ahead, Maraia told the NLJ, "Telemedicine will become more popular, with different apps that monitor health. The part that's getting challenging is with the new America Invents Act and Section 101 patentable subject matter rules. You have to be careful on how to claim the patents so they are not interpreted as pure business method patents. But these applications are set to become very popular."
Maraia has been listed in Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America and Massachusetts Super Lawyers. He also has been named an "IP Star" in Managing Intellectual Property. He received his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School and his B.S. in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
