HOUSTON, Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Four attorneys from Burleson LLP's Houston location will present a two-day seminar on crucial elements of midstream oil and gas contracts of interest to non-lawyers.
The event, which will be held on Sept. 15 and 16 at the Hotel ICON in Houston, will highlight strategies for avoiding legal risks and critical insights for negotiating and creating clear, workable agreements. Sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including elements of contract formation, types of special contract provisions, real estate issues with midstream contracts, dispute resolution strategies, and contract management.
Bob Ballentine, leader of Burleson's Midstream Practice Group, said the course will provide commercial managers with a broader understanding of the fundamental skills and knowledge required to negotiate effective agreements with suppliers, customers, partners, and other counter-parties.
"Midstream companies handle the bulk of their business through contracts, which is why it's particularly important for employees in this sector to understand the factors that ultimately determine the company's rights," explained Ballentine, who has more than 30 years of commercial litigation and arbitration experience. "This seminar will bring those considerations to the forefront to support the non-attorney in putting solid contracts in place and in managing and administering the agreements long after the ink has dried."
Ballentine, who has an extensive background representing companies in complex commercial disputes over upstream and midstream energy contracts, will join three other Houston-based Burleson attorneys to present the seminar. They are:
- David Bond, a partner who has more than three decades of experience in commercial and business litigation, including contracts, business torts, securities, antitrust, civil RICO, shareholder oppression, lender liability, and insurance coverage disputes.
- Philip Kinkaid, a partner who handles a spectrum of matters for companies in the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors; oilfield services companies; and energy investment funds. In the midstream sector, he focuses on the development of new facilities, acquisitions and divestitures, and the negotiation of long-term contracts.
- Jason Nelson, senior counsel who represents public and private energy companies in a range of complex transactional areas, including securities, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate governance, and commercial and project finance.
