Bunker Hill Community College's LEED Gold Building Featured on Architectural Tour
BOSTON, July 20, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College participated in the "Common Boston Week 2011" festival (June 16 –25). This was a first-time collaboration between BHCC and Common Boston, a volunteer program of the Boston Society of Architects. Other collaborators included Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's Office of Urban Mechanics, which focuses on building partnerships between city agencies and outside institutions and entrepreneurs.
The festival's celebration of architecture and design in Boston's neighborhoods included a walking tour that featured the College's LEED Gold-certified Health & Wellness Center. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system.
During the visit, participants learned about the different ways sustainability is built into the Center, such as the retention ponds that collect rainwater and reduce runoff, day-lighting strategies that reduce energy usage, and a variety of passive solar design strategies that maximize the use of the sun's energy for heating and cooling needs.
BHCC also donated approximately 22 boxes of used books to Common Boston that were used as part of a "topographic book-scape," a sculpture that served as the backdrop for a performance art installation.
Bunker Hill Community College was an official sponsor of the festival. See: http://www.commonboston.org/cb11/sponsors.
